The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced an inquiry into alleged consumer rights violations by Air Peace, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), and MTN Nigeria. The investigation will address complaints about exploitative practices and poor service delivery in the aviation, banking, and telecommunications sectors.
FCCPC spokesperson Ondaje Ijagwu disclosed on Sunday that the probe, scheduled for December 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2024, respectively, will examine the operations of the three companies under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
In the aviation sector, Air Peace is under scrutiny for allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, including sharp increases for advance bookings on domestic routes.
In banking, GTB faces an inquiry into reports of frequent network failures that prevent customers from accessing their funds or using banking applications, leading to widespread frustration.
For telecommunications, MTN Nigeria is being investigated over persistent complaints of undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer support.
“The FCCPC’s inquiries aim to address these consumer complaints, clarify business practices, and enforce compliance with regulatory standards,” the commission stated.
The FCCPC emphasized that these hearings provide a platform for the companies to respond to allegations and resolve consumer grievances.
The inquiries are part of a broader initiative to safeguard consumer rights and promote fair competition. The commission urged Nigerians to continue reporting issues of poor service delivery or exploitative practices through its official channels.
This investigation highlights the Nigerian government’s renewed commitment to holding businesses accountable for upholding consumer protection standards across vital sectors.
