Suspected kidnappers fled into a bush in Asaba, Delta State, after abandoning their vehicle and sustaining gunshot injuries during a police operation.
The incident unfolded on the night of November 27, 2024, around 9:45 p.m., along Oko Market Road, according to a statement by Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
Swift Police Response
Acting on a distress call regarding a kidnapping on DLA Road in Asaba, the Delta State Police Command dispatched its Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad (SAKCCS), led by CSP Labe Joseph. The squad tracked the suspects, who were operating a Toyota Camry with registration number Enugu BLF 490 AA.
The hoodlums had kidnapped a man and a woman, whose names were withheld, and seized a Toyota Camry belonging to another victim.
Upon spotting the approaching police team near the Ezenei area by the Asaba-Benin Expressway, the suspects attempted to flee. A high-speed chase ensued, forcing the suspects to divert to Oko Market Road. Eventually, they abandoned their vehicle and escaped into the nearby bush while reportedly injured.
Recovered Items
The police recovered an array of items from the suspects, including:
- One AK-47 rifle with a defaced breach number
- Two pump-action guns
- A magazine loaded with eight rounds of AR live ammunition
- Twenty-one live cartridges concealed in the engine compartment of the abandoned vehicle
Assurance of Justice
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised the team’s efforts and assured residents that the command would relentlessly pursue the fleeing suspects. "The safety of the community remains our priority," the CP stated, emphasizing that the criminals would be apprehended and brought to justice.
The Delta State Police Command also urged residents to report suspicious activities and individuals seeking medical attention for bullet wounds to aid in the investigation.
