Gunmen have attacked Umuchima village in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, resulting in the death of a local man who was reportedly accused of providing information to the Nigerian Army about militant activities in the region.

The assault occurred just days after the Nigerian Army’s Joint Task Force, operating under the codename Operation Udo Ka, successfully destroyed a camp in the village. The attack on Umuchima is believed to be in retaliation for the Army's recent operation.

The victim, identified as an indigene of Umuchima, was allegedly targeted for his role in aiding the military. Following the killing, fear gripped the village, prompting several residents to flee their homes. Many villagers relocated to nearby communities, vowing to return once the situation stabilized.

“We couldn’t take the risk,” said one of the displaced villagers. “They came in like soldiers, stormed the village, and killed someone they accused of being an informant. The fear is real, and no one wants to become a victim.”

This latest attack follows a previous clash between Nigerian Army personnel from the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unknown gunmen in the same village. Reports indicate that over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers were deployed to Umuchima early in the morning, targeting suspected militants who had been camped near a river marking the boundary between Abia and Imo States.

The Abia State Government, alongside security agencies, has pledged to intensify efforts to eradicate the gunmen who have been terrorizing the region. The gunmen have been responsible for numerous attacks, including the killing of several security operatives, as they continue to destabilize the area.

Local authorities are working to calm the situation, but the persistent threat from the militants has left many in fear, with residents hopeful for a resolution to the violence.
