The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has expressed grave concern over the growing number of abandoned babies in Abuja, attributing the trend to men abandoning their responsibilities after impregnating women.
Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed in a statement on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter) that two new cases of abandoned babies were reported on Saturday alone.
“This alarming trend is deeply troubling,” Adeh stated. “It largely stems from men failing to take responsibility after impregnating women. If you are not prepared to embrace fatherhood, avoid unprotected sex or abstain entirely.”
The issue of abandoned babies is not limited to Abuja but is a significant problem across Nigeria. According to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, there are an estimated 17.5 million orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in the country. Globally, approximately 140 million children are classified as orphans, with countless others abandoned or neglected.
The FCT Police Command is calling on individuals, families, and communities to address the root causes of child abandonment and take collective action to prevent the neglect of vulnerable children.
As efforts to address this crisis continue, the police urge residents to report any suspected cases of child abandonment to the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of affected children.
