The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced notable progress in Nigeria's battle against insurgency, reporting a surge in terrorist surrenders, particularly in the north-central region.
Edward Buba, the director of defence media operations, revealed that several high-profile terrorist leaders, including the infamous Yellow Jambros, have surrendered to Nigerian forces. Others who laid down their arms include Alhaji Mallam, Ardo Idi (also known as Alhaji Lawal), Lawal Kwalba, Salkado, Yellow Ibrahim, Gana’e, and Babangida.
Buba attributed the success to a combination of intensified military offensives and collaborative non-kinetic strategies, which have encouraged insurgents to abandon their activities. "The military is committed to maintaining its operational momentum to further weaken insurgent networks and foster more surrenders," he said.
The surrender of Yellow Jambros has sparked discussions, given reports that he was killed in a December 2023 airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force in Niger State. Earlier this year, a counter-terrorism report suggested Jambros had escaped during a raid. His recent surrender underscores the challenges of monitoring terrorist leadership in the region.
In the past week, Nigerian troops have recorded significant achievements, including the elimination of 135 terrorists, the arrest of 185 suspects, and the rescue of 129 kidnapped individuals. Additionally, troops recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and vehicles. Operations in the Niger Delta region led to the seizure of 909,800 liters of stolen crude oil and other illegally refined petroleum products.
Buba expressed optimism about the military's progress, stating that the sustained efforts place the armed forces in a "winning position" in the ongoing fight against insurgency and terrorism.
