Two people have been confirmed dead in separate violent incidents that occurred on Friday in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.
According to Abdullahi Usman, the State Police Public Relations Officer, the first attack took place when gunmen stormed a residential compound. The assailants shattered the windows of the house with machetes before opening fire on a young woman who was studying for an upcoming examination.
“The victim was in her room studying when the gunmen shot her in the back. The bullet exited through her stomach,” Usman said. Despite ordering the other residents of the house to step outside, the attackers did not steal anything or take anyone hostage.
In the second attack, which took place in the Jerbanbur area of Jalingo, a clergyman was targeted by gunmen who shot him before fleeing the scene. Like the previous attack, the assailants did not engage in kidnapping or theft.
“Both victims were rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, they succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment,” Usman added.
The police have described the attacks as unusual, emphasizing that the perpetrators did not follow the typical pattern of kidnappings for ransom that have plagued the region.
A full investigation has been launched, with law enforcement working diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings. The police are urging residents to remain vigilant as they continue to search for clues in this disturbing case.
