President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement of a simplified visa process for Nigerian nationals has sparked widespread criticism, with some South Africans calling for his resignation.

The policy, unveiled during the 11th Session of the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission on December 3, aims to boost economic growth and promote tourism. However, it has drawn sharp backlash from citizens who accuse the government of prioritizing foreign relations over pressing domestic issues.

Critics have expressed their displeasure in an open letter to the president and through heated debates on social media. Many argue that the relaxed visa rules could worsen existing social and economic challenges in the country.

Under the new policy, Nigerian businesspeople who qualify can receive a five-year multiple-entry visa without needing to present a passport during the application process. President Ramaphosa described the initiative as part of broader efforts to modernize and streamline visa systems globally.

“Our efforts to create a favourable environment include introducing a simplified visa process for Nigerian businesspeople. This is part of our strategy to encourage economic cooperation and strengthen ties between our two countries,” he explained.

The announcement comes amid strained relations between South Africans and Nigerians, often reflected in tense social media exchanges. Critics worry that the policy may deepen existing tensions and strain resources.

In response to the backlash, the presidency defended the decision as a strategic move to foster stronger bilateral relations and economic collaboration.

While the government remains steadfast in its position, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between international diplomacy and addressing domestic concerns in a politically charged climate.
