A Nigerian woman has expressed her frustration after her siblings, whom she sponsors, were served akpu (fufu) and egusi soup during their school’s graduation party, despite the hefty fees she pays for their education.
In a viral TikTok video, the woman called out Hold Height Academy, where her siblings attend, for what she described as an unacceptable celebration meal. She shared the video, showing her siblings and expressing her dissatisfaction with the school, which charges high fees but allegedly fails to deliver adequate services and value in return.
The woman detailed how, in addition to the expensive school fees, parents are constantly required to purchase textbooks and other materials. However, she was particularly upset about the meal served at the graduation event, which she felt was unworthy of the amount paid for both the tuition and the event.
“These are my siblings. I’m expressing how I feel and calling out Hold Height Academy. Their school fees are expensive. After paying school fees, they’ll ask us to buy other things, and we comply. Their results aren’t the issue here,” she stated.
She continued, “Today is their graduation party, and they shared akpu and egusi soup with them at school. What is this, despite all the money we’ve paid? Even the soup doesn’t have oil, and they gave them pure water. Rice may be expensive, but you collect a lot in school fees and for the graduation party. Yet, this is what you’re sharing?”
The video quickly gained traction online, sparking a mix of reactions from social media users. While some sympathized with the woman’s concerns about the lack of quality for the price, others defended the school, suggesting that the meal was a matter of budget constraints.
The incident has reignited debates about the rising cost of education and the expectations parents have when it comes to school events and celebrations.
