The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has confirmed the kidnapping of one of its editors, Gregory Maduakolam, in Owerri, Imo State. The abduction occurred on the night of Thursday, December 5, 2024, with details of the exact location still unclear.
NAN issued a statement on Friday evening, revealing that Maduakolam reported the kidnapping himself during a brief phone call with a staff member at approximately 7:33 p.m. on Thursday. According to the agency, Maduakolam stated that he was abducted by unknown assailants around 9:00 a.m. the same day.
However, during the phone call, his captors snatched his phone and demanded a ransom, leaving Maduakolam unable to provide any further details about the location of the abduction.
The agency expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the kidnap of our staff and are working closely with the authorities to ensure his safe return. Our thoughts are with Gregory and his family during this difficult time."
NAN’s management assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to facilitate Maduakolam’s safe release. They also appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
"The safety and well-being of our staff are of utmost importance, and we are committed to doing everything possible to bring Gregory home safely," the statement concluded.
As investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to track down the perpetrators and secure the editor’s release.
