A Delta State University (DELSU) student, Miss Onos Roman, has regained her freedom following an alleged payment of ₦1 million to her abductors.
The 22-year-old student was released on Friday afternoon, two days after her kidnapping in Abraka, Ethiope-East Local Government Area. The victim's elder sister, Ese Roman, confirmed the development in a message to reporters, stating that her sister is now safe and reunited with their family.
The ordeal began on Thursday when Miss Roman was abducted by unknown assailants who reportedly stripped her and used her phone to issue a chilling ransom demand to her family. The kidnappers insisted that ₦1 million be paid before 1:00 p.m. on Friday, threatening dire consequences if the deadline was missed.
Ese revealed that the payment was made as instructed, leading to her sister's release later that day. "She is fine and doing well now," Ese assured.
Local authorities have yet to confirm if investigations are ongoing or if arrests have been made. The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in the region, with families often forced to negotiate with criminals to secure the safety of loved ones.
Residents of Abraka are calling for improved security measures to curb the alarming trend of kidnappings in the area.
