Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s military ruler, has dismissed Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla and dissolved the government, marking another chapter in the country’s political upheaval.

A presidential decree issued on Friday announced the decision but provided no explanation for the sudden move. Members of the dissolved government were directed to manage ongoing affairs until a new administration is established.

Kyélem de Tambèla, appointed in October 2022 after Traoré seized power in a coup, served under three different governments during his tenure. His dismissal comes amidst a turbulent political landscape that began with a January 2022 coup led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Traoré ousted Damiba eight months later, and the former leader remains in exile in Togo.

Under Traoré’s leadership, the junta has championed national sovereignty and taken a critical stance against Western influence, particularly distancing itself from France, the former colonial power. Instead, Burkina Faso has pivoted toward alliances with neighboring Mali and Niger, co-founding the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in 2023. This coalition has fostered closer ties with Russia, which has provided military instructors to support the fight against jihadist violence in the region.

The ongoing jihadist insurgency, originating in northern Mali in 2012, has severely impacted Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, leaving over 26,000 people dead and displacing nearly two million. Despite these challenges, Traoré’s junta has emphasized its commitment to tackling security threats and rebuilding governance structures.

Observers note that the latest political shake-up underscores the volatility in Burkina Faso’s leadership as it grapples with internal and external pressures amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.
