Vadodara Cybercrime Police have arrested three Nigerian nationals for allegedly running a cyber racket that duped hundreds of people across India. The accused, identified as Lezhu John, Gibril Mohammed, and Egboola Ekena, were apprehended in Delhi, according to a police statement released on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

The arrests followed a complaint by a woman in her late 20s, who reported losing over Rs 2.62 lakh to the scam. The complainant revealed she had connected with one of the accused, using the alias "Sohn Yunmin," on Instagram. Claiming to be a US chemical engineer working in a UK energy firm, Yunmin befriended her by stating he was soon relocating to Assam for work.

The scam unfolded in April when the accused convinced the woman to send Rs 50,000, claiming financial difficulties in purchasing machinery. Later, she received calls from a woman named Niharika, who demanded additional payments for a parcel allegedly containing US dollars. Over time, the victim transferred Rs 1.69 lakh before realizing she was being defrauded.

Police traced the suspects using the bank account transactions linked to the fraud. Investigations uncovered that the accused had employed over 500 bank accounts and had over 900 related complaints nationwide.

“These individuals used fake profiles created with stolen photographs to manipulate and cheat unsuspecting victims,” explained ACP (Cybercrime) M M Rajput. “Their mobile devices contained numerous images of men and women used in their scams.”

The arrests highlight the extensive operations of cybercriminals targeting victims through social media platforms, urging authorities and the public to remain vigilant against online fraud.
