Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the African Action Congress (AAC), recently expressed criticism of Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, following Obi's visit to Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University.
Sowore accused Obi of hypocrisy, highlighting the imprisonment of Dele Farotimi, a human rights lawyer and prominent supporter of Obi, over alleged defamation of Afe Babalola.
Peter Obi responded by condemning Farotimi's detention, describing it as an abuse of police power and an assault on democracy.
He called for the immediate and unconditional release of Farotimi, stressing that defamation is a civil matter that should not be weaponized through law enforcement.
Obi also emphasized the need for impartiality and adherence to democratic norms, underscoring the importance of freedom of expression and the rule of law in Nigeria.
I strongly condemn those who went to 'be' Chief Afe Babalola today regarding the unjust dentention and persecution of Dele Farotimi.
The delegation led by Mr Peter Obi has committed an unspeakable and despicable injustice in the fight against judicial corruption in our country. Obi's actions feel like forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus (of racial injustice) during the Civil Rights era in the United States.
The struggle continues! Sowore wrote.
