A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama has remanded former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, in Kuje prison after adjourning his trial to February 25, 2025
Justice Maryann Anenih issued the remand order on Tuesday, dismissing Bello’s bail application filed earlier.
Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, is facing a 16-count charge related to his alleged involvement in a N110 billion fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused him and two Kogi state officials, Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and possession of unlawfully obtained property.
The court dismissed Bello’s bail application, ruling it was filed prematurely on November 22, three days before he surrendered to the EFCC. Bello has been in custody since November 25. The EFCC opposed his release, citing his history of evading trial and his refusal to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the second and third defendants were granted bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties each, while their travel documents were confiscated.
The charges include allegations that Bello misused state funds to acquire multiple properties in Nigeria and abroad, including luxurious real estate in Abuja and Dubai, as well as transferring large sums of money to the United States.
