A tragic auto crash in Jigawa State has claimed the lives of 14 passengers, leaving the community in shock.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, when a Golf 3 waggon somersaulted and crashed into a river near Tage Bridge in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the vehicle, registered GML 842 XA, was going from Hadejia to Makera village when the accident occurred.
Providing an update to PUNCH on Tuesday evening, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, stated that all 14 passengers in the commercial motor vehicle were confirmed dead after being transported to the nearby Hadejia General Hospital.
“A doctor confirmed the death of eight women, two men, and four young men at the scene. The driver miraculously survived and is assisting police with investigations,” he explained further.
Adam stated that the only survivor of the collision was the driver, who is still unconscious at Hadejia General Hospital.
“A thorough search and investigation into the cause of the accident are ongoing. The police appeal to the public to provide information aiding the investigation,” he further said.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday described the scene as horrific, with bodies lying scattered around.
Nahuru Bello explained that the driver was unable to stop in time because of the collapsed Tage Bridge, which had been in disrepair since the previous rainy season. He added that the vehicle was traveling at high speed before losing control.
