The Nigerian Army has announced the successful thwarting of a planned banditry attack in Southern Taraba State by troops of the 6 Brigade, Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

In a statement released on Thursday, the Army detailed how the operation was initiated based on credible intelligence about an impending terrorist attack on villages in the area.

“On December 11, 2024, troops swiftly launched a series of aggressive patrols, ambushes, and covert operations to prevent the attack,” the statement read.

During the operation, two suspects, identified as Terry Waapara and Tobaya Tekura, were apprehended in Adu village. They were intercepted while attempting to infiltrate the Chachanji market, allegedly planning to execute criminal activities, including kidnapping.

The operation led to the recovery of:

Two AK-47 rifles

Two AK-47 magazines

26 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

The suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing further investigation to uncover details about their network and criminal activities.

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade, praised the troops for their vigilance and swift response, which led to the operation’s success.

“The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its fight against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality,” Brigadier General Uwa said.

He also expressed gratitude to law-abiding citizens for their support and cooperation in providing timely and actionable intelligence.

“Together, we will continue to work towards a safer and more secure nation,” he added.

The operation underscores the Army’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in Taraba State and the broader region.
