One Person Dead, Houses Burnt As Gunmen Raid Gombe Community

Chaos erupted in Powishi Village, Kalmai District, Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, as armed men launched a deadly attack on the community.

The incident resulted in the death of one person, the destruction of houses, and the theft of numerous livestock.

Buhari Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Gombe State Command, confirmed this in a statement made in Gombe on Thursday.

Abdullahi stated that the incident took place around 1 a.m. on Thursday when the criminals, armed with dangerous weapons such as machetes, invaded the village and stole livestock.

The Gombe Police image maker further stated that the gunmen killed one Yusuf Akwara and set fire to buildings during the terrible operation.

“In the early hour of 12/12/2024 at about 0100hrs, information was received from the Divisional Police Officer Billiri LGA, that group of people on motorbikes suspected to be herders armed with dangerous weapons, invaded and attacked Powishi village, set some number of houses ablaze and rustled unknown number of animals.

“On the receipt of the information, a combined team of Police officers and 301 artillery regiment led by the Area Commander Billiri was mobilised and rushed to the scene with a view to containing the situation.”


However, he said that the perpetrators had fled the village before the security teams arrived.

The PPRO also stated that the nearby community and security officials worked together to extinguish the fire.

Meanwhile, the Gombe State Police Command has denounced the incident and promised to bring the offenders to account.

During an on-the-spot inspection visit to the area, the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, condemned the incident.

CP Usman was accompanied to the community on Thursday afternoon by the Commanding Officer of the 301 Artillery Regiment, the state Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Chairperson of the Billiri Local Government Area.

The CP requested the public to be patient and cooperate with the police as they investigate the heinous act.

He stated that a team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, as well as members from the 34PMF, 59PMF, and conventional police officers, had been deployed to track down the criminals.
