In a dramatic political turn, South Korea's National Assembly voted on Saturday, December 14, to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his failed attempt to impose martial law. The impeachment vote saw 204 lawmakers in favor, with 85 voting against, amid protests in Seoul.
The decision triggered celebrations outside parliament, as protesters hailed the move. Yoon, addressing the nation shortly after the vote, acknowledged the setback but vowed not to give up on his vision for the country's future. “I will stop temporarily for now, but the journey I’ve walked with the people over the past two years should not stop,” he said in a statement released by the presidential office. “I will not give up. With all the encouragement and support for me in mind, I will do my best until the last moment for the nation.”
In accordance with South Korean law, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will assume the role of acting president. Han assured the public that he would focus all efforts on ensuring the stable operation of state affairs during this turbulent time.
The impeachment follows a dramatic series of events that began on December 3, when President Yoon briefly declared martial law, sending soldiers to parliament in an attempt to quell dissent. However, lawmakers managed to break past the troops to vote down the decree, turning what was meant to be a show of strength into a major political blunder.
