The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has strongly dismissed the rumors circulating on social media about the death of its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, claiming that he passed away in London. INEC issued a statement clarifying that Professor Yakubu is alive and in good health, urging the public to ignore the false claims.
According to a statement from INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the chairman has not visited London in the past two years. The rumor, which began circulating on December 9, 2024, falsely claimed that Yakubu had died in a London hospital.
“The INEC Chairman is hale and hearty. He attended an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on December 11, 2024, and chaired a Commission meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners the following day, both of which were covered extensively in the media,” the statement read.
This is not the first time such false reports have circulated; a similar rumor was spread in 2021. INEC has warned those responsible for spreading fake news to be aware of the harm they cause, emphasizing the potential negative impact on individuals and society as a whole.
The commission reiterated its commitment to working with the media to combat misinformation and ensure the public receives accurate information.
