The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Cynthia Akaeen, an Italy-based businesswoman, on Wednesday, December 18, for attempting to smuggle 9,190 tablets of tramadol through Lagos airport.
Akaeen was intercepted by NDLEA officers at Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport during routine passenger clearance for a Royal Air Maroc flight heading to Italy via Addis Ababa.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the tablets, which weighed 6 kilograms in total, were concealed on her person. During questioning, Akaeen admitted that she was promised a payment of 1,000 Euros upon successfully delivering the consignment to its destination in Italy.
The agency’s swift intervention highlights ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trafficking of controlled substances through Nigerian airports.
