The Nigerian Navy has successfully intercepted a boat carrying approximately 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil off the coast of Idiogba-Mahin in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.
Captain Aliyu Usman, Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, revealed details of the operation during an assessment visit on Thursday. He confirmed that the Navy acted on reliable intelligence, deploying its Quick Response Team to the site.
The team seized a large wooden boat loaded with stolen crude oil, along with equipment typically used in illegal bunkering activities, including discharge hoses and pumping machines. However, the perpetrators managed to flee upon sighting the Navy personnel.
“The criminals abandoned the boat and fled upon encountering our team. We secured the boat and its contents,” Usman said. He added that a sample of the crude oil was taken for laboratory testing, and both the boat and its cargo were processed according to standard procedures.
