*Ogobiri community in Bayelsa State witnessed a shocking incident as two suspected thieves were electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal solar-powered streetlights.*
The tragic event occurred early on Saturday, December 28, near the New Site of Niger Delta University and the Ogobiri roundabout in Sagbama Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects had successfully dismantled four solar streetlight poles and were in the process of loosening the fifth one when disaster struck. The fifth pole reportedly fell onto nearby high-tension wires, resulting in their electrocution.
Residents discovered the lifeless bodies of the two individuals hours later, raising concerns about the persistent issue of streetlight theft in the area.
“The theft of streetlights has been rampant around here,” a local resident stated. “It’s unfortunate that it had to end this way, but it highlights the risks involved in such criminal activities.”
Community leaders have called for increased vigilance and security measures to curb the frequent thefts of public infrastructure. Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but the incident serves as a stark warning against such dangerous and illegal practices.
