A violent altercation at a birthday party in a hotel located in the Kajini community, off the Abuja-Zuba Expressway, left three men injured, including a Nigerian soldier, Emmanuel Adam. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 pm on Thursday, escalated into a physical confrontation after a disagreement between a soldier and a local resident, identified as Yusuf.
According to the hotel manager, Richard Omaka, the birthday celebration, which had guests from within and outside the city, was initially a peaceful gathering. However, the atmosphere changed when an argument broke out between Yusuf and the soldier. Omaka, upon hearing the disturbance, intervened and tried to separate the two men, moving one of them to the VIP section in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
"The guests were eating, drinking, and having fun, until I heard an unpleasant conversation around 11:48 pm," Omaka explained. "I tried to intervene and take one of them to the VIP section to calm things down."
Despite the manager's efforts, tensions flared when Emmanuel, the soldier, returned to the VIP section and physically confronted Yusuf, striking him in the process. The altercation left Yusuf injured, particularly around his mouth. As the situation intensified, the conflict was temporarily diffused when bystanders intervened and removed Yusuf from the premises.
However, chaos resumed when Yusuf, having been escorted off the property, forcefully re-entered the venue and attacked Emmanuel, causing the soldier to lose consciousness. Yusuf fled the scene immediately, but he was later tracked down and brought back to the hotel by a group of people who beat him in retaliation.
To prevent further violence, the hotel manager locked Yusuf in a room to protect him from the enraged crowd. Meanwhile, a mob attempted to force their way into the locked room, destroying a screen door at the reception. The police arrived at the scene shortly after 1:00 am, took both injured men to the station, and later transported them to a nearby clinic for medical attention.
A third individual, Bola Alunsko, was also injured in the melee. Alunsko had opened the hotel gate to allow Yusuf access after the facility was locked down. He was reportedly attacked by the soldier, who struck him several times before he was rescued by others.
Emmanuel Adam, the soldier, was later admitted to Kubwa General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. When contacted, CSP Muktar Goni Adam, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of 'A' Division, Dei-Dei, confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations were underway.
The altercation has sparked concerns over safety and conduct at social events, especially with the involvement of uniformed personnel. Police are expected to provide further details as the investigation continues.
