A devastating fire that broke out near the Okokomaiko Police Station in Lagos has caused extensive damage to the station and surrounding structures, including residential buildings and a hotel. The fire, which began from a diesel tanker, has been contained after a coordinated emergency response, though significant property loss occurred.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the fire originated from a tanker carrying 10,000 liters of diesel. The tanker was supplying fuel to a nearby network mast when the blaze ignited while the contents were being discharged.

“The fire spread rapidly to nearby buildings, including the Okokomaiko Police Station, three bungalows, and parts of a nearby hotel,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained. “Fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were reported, though the damages are significant.”

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 12:38 pm via the 767/112 toll-free emergency lines. LASEMA immediately activated its Emergency Response Team, and teams from other agencies including LASTMA, the fire service, the Nigerian Army, and the police joined forces to tackle the blaze.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found the diesel tanker engulfed in flames. The fire quickly spread to several properties in the vicinity. Three bungalows were completely destroyed, with household items worth hundreds of thousands of naira damaged. Additionally, a lock-up shop and four containerized shops were also destroyed.

A generator house and the kitchen of an unknown hotel were affected, and electrical cables connected to a nearby PHCN transformer were damaged by the fire.

The fire has raised concerns about safety and the need for proper precautions when handling hazardous materials, especially in residential and densely populated areas. Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage, while emergency teams are working to ensure that any remaining risks are neutralized.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and the quick response of local agencies in preventing further damage and potential loss of life.
