Tragedy struck in Kuchiyako village, Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, as a 38-year-old man, Zacharia Moses, collapsed and died while attempting to break up a fight at a Christmas party.
According to eyewitness Danlami, the incident occurred at approximately 9:33 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, during a community celebration at the village square. The fight reportedly began after a misunderstanding between two young men over a missing phone.
"A boy raised an alarm that his phone was stolen from his pocket while dancing and accused another boy of stealing it," Danlami recounted. "The accused denied the allegation, and a search was conducted, but the phone wasn’t found on him."
The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation. Moses, who intervened to separate the pair, suddenly collapsed during the scuffle. Onlookers attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful.
"He was rushed to a hospital in Kuje," Danlami said. "A relative later revealed that he was asthmatic, but by the time they arrived, doctors had already confirmed him dead."
The deceased's body was deposited at the hospital mortuary. Meanwhile, the two young men involved in the altercation were apprehended by local vigilantes and handed over to security personnel for further investigation.
The incident has cast a pall over the community, with residents expressing sorrow over the unexpected loss. Security personnel have yet to release a statement regarding the case.
