The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified efforts to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta, dismantling 37 illegal refining sites and arresting 10 suspected oil thieves in a week-long operation.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the operations, carried out between December 16 and 22, 2024, also led to the recovery of over 130,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.
Among the major successes was the destruction of nine illegal refining sites in Obiafu, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State, where troops confiscated 176 cooking drums, pumping machines, and over 60,000 litres of stolen crude oil, Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK). Four suspects were arrested at the site.
In Asari-Toru Local Government Area, three refining sites and a large boat were dismantled, yielding the recovery of 24,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. Similar successes were recorded in Degema LGA, where troops intercepted three boats carrying over 16,000 litres of stolen crude and refined products.
Operations extended to Ozorchi Forest in Abua/Odual and along the Imo River, where 15,000 litres of stolen products and several refining equipment were seized. In Bayelsa State, troops disrupted oil theft activities in Southern Ijaw LGA, confiscating 2,000 litres of stolen crude, and foiled an attempt to compromise a Shell Petroleum Development Company pipeline in Ekeremor LGA.
Notably, in Delta State, troops intercepted a tanker truck rigged with a concealed hose to siphon crude oil from a pipeline in Obiukwole Community, Ethiope East LGA. Four suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident.
In Akwa Ibom State, the military maintained heightened patrols across waterways and hinterlands to deter criminal activities.
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, commended the troops’ efforts, urging them to remain vigilant. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to denying criminals any operational foothold in the region, assuring the public of continued security measures to protect the nation’s resources.
These operations reflect a robust strategy by security forces to curtail oil theft and its associated economic and environmental damages in the Niger Delta.
