Tragedy struck in Kangiwa Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Saturday as a fresh unprovoked attack by the notorious Lakurawa armed group claimed the lives of two immigration officers and one civilian.
Sources revealed that the officers were at a site where border-monitoring equipment was set to be installed when the gunmen launched their assault.
By 2 p.m. the same day, a crowd had gathered at Sir Yahya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, where the bodies of the victims were transported in a Hilux vehicle. Immigration officers guarding the scene declined to speak to the press.
Efforts to obtain comments from the spokespersons of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, and the Immigration Service proved unsuccessful, as they neither answered calls nor responded to text messages.
At the time of filing this report, no official statements had been issued by either the police or immigration authorities regarding the attack.
The latest assault by the Lakurawa group has sparked renewed concerns over the security challenges in border communities across the state. Residents and stakeholders are calling for stronger measures to protect law enforcement officials and civilians in the area.
