Popular Nigerian singer Mr May D has opened up about how he lost the opportunity to collaborate with American superstar Akon, after he shared the news with the music duo PSquare.
Speaking on the “Honest Bunch” podcast with Nedu Wazobia and others, May D recounted the sequence of events that led to him missing out on a potential partnership with Akon. He revealed that PSquare initially didn’t want to sign him, offering only to help him gain recognition, similar to what they did for artists like Jay Martins.
May D explained that Akon took a liking to his hit song "Chop My Money" and expressed interest in being involved with it. The American singer insisted that the music video be shot in the U.S., or he wouldn’t participate. This led May D to fly to America to meet with Akon, where the superstar asked him if he had a deal with PSquare. When May D confirmed he didn’t, Akon mentioned he had several opportunities lined up for him.
Akon reportedly offered to pay for May D's return ticket to America to begin working on the deals he had in mind. However, May D shared that he felt the need to be transparent with PSquare, so he disclosed the conversation with Akon.
Reflecting on the situation, May D admitted that in hindsight, he wished he hadn’t told PSquare about Akon’s offer. He now believes that keeping quiet might have been a better decision.
