Joan Munday, a sixth grade teacher at Plumb Creek Elementary School in the small town of Joshua, Texas, became violently ill on Tuesday night after drinking the spiked tea, myFOXdfw.com said.
A small dose of sodium carbonate, which is used in domestic detergents, can cause nausea. In large doses, it is fatal.
"The student was able to obtain sodium carbonate from a science kit in a small quantity and put it into tea the teacher was drinking," Captain Troy Fuller, of Johnson County Sheriff's Department said.
When Ms Munday didn't come to school yesterday, students told school staff about the poisoning plot.
The boy was charged with assault on a public servant and is being held in a juvenile detention centre.
