A lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic, Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, narrowly escaped a life-threatening attack in his office on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The incident, reportedly carried out by a female student and her boyfriend, has left the academic community in shock.

According to Auwal Ismail Bagwai, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, the attack occurred around 2 p.m. while Abdullahi, who also serves as the department’s exam officer, was attending to students. The female student, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly accused the lecturer of being an obstacle to her academic progress.

Reports indicate that the student entered the office accompanied by her boyfriend. During the confrontation, the boyfriend brandished a cutlass and attempted to strike Abdullahi, aiming for his head. Quick action by other students and staff present in the office averted a fatal outcome.

“The female student had requested to transfer to a different department but was informed that her grades did not qualify her for the desired course,” Bagwai stated. “Frustrated by the outcome, she blamed the lecturer and sought her boyfriend’s assistance to intimidate him.”

The lecturer sustained injuries to his hands while fending off the attack and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Security personnel from the institution were immediately alerted and launched an investigation.

In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, security officers visited the Dorayi area of Kano, where the female student and her boyfriend are believed to reside. However, their efforts were met with resistance, as a group of thugs reportedly assaulted the officers.

“The student and her accomplice remain at large, but security agencies are actively pursuing the matter,” Bagwai confirmed. “We assure the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

The incident has raised concerns over safety within academic environments, with stakeholders calling for stricter measures to protect staff and ensure a conducive learning atmosphere. Meanwhile, the authorities have reiterated their commitment to uncovering the full details of the attack and holding those responsible accountable.
