In a significant operation, the Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the arrest of 10 suspected Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) members in Ilesa, Osun State. The covert raid, which took place in the early hours of December 16, 2024, targeted a bungalow near St. Mary Catholic Church in the Ifofin and Ogbon Idio areas of Ilesa-East Local Government Area.

A specialized team of around 30 DSS operatives conducted the operation after 90 days of surveillance and intelligence gathering. The suspects, including individuals such as Adamu Abubakar (aka Abu Aisha) and Muhammed Adam, were allegedly involved in the manufacturing and detonation of explosives. DSS investigations confirm their affiliation with Boko Haram/ISWAP, with evidence suggesting they were planning coordinated terror attacks.

The operation, carried out without any gunfire, follows a year-long intelligence operation initiated in 2023, after receiving information about a potential ISWAP strike on a local church. Despite a setback when intelligence was leaked, the DSS intensified efforts, leading to the December arrests.

The suspects were apprehended with bomb-making materials and other ISWAP-related items. Local leaders and residents, who described the suspects as peaceful traders, expressed shock over the arrests, as many had lived in the area for years without incident. Some locals voiced increased concerns about safety, with calls for heightened security awareness following the arrests.

The DSS operation, which involved teams from outside Osun State, also faced challenges due to compromised intelligence, which led to the exclusion of the DSS Osun command from the mission. Despite these hurdles, the operation was successful in neutralizing a potential threat to the region.

The DSS filed an application on January 10, 2025, to detain the suspects for 60 days as investigations continue. This follows a similar operation in Osun State in 2022, underscoring the ongoing efforts of security agencies to combat terrorism in the region.
