Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has disclosed that he rejected suggestions to perform rituals ahead of his ascent to office, attributing his victory to unwavering faith in God.

Governor Diri, often referred to as the “miracle governor,” made this revelation during the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Annual Day of Thanksgiving in Sampou on Friday.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor recounted how a senior citizen once invited him to Abuja during the legal battle challenging the declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate as the winner of the 2019 Bayelsa governorship election.

Diri stated, *“A senior citizen of this country asked me to carry out certain sacrifices, but I refused, citing my faith in God. He became angry and said I would never become governor. He even demanded a refund of $10,000 he had spent organizing the ritual, which I paid back.”*

The governor revealed that the individual was stunned when the Supreme Court eventually declared him the rightful winner, adding that the person could not reach out to him before their eventual passing.

Diri further emphasized the importance of gratitude and faith, highlighting the divine intervention that led to his leadership. He said, *“Kolokuma/Opokuma people have every reason to thank God. As a state, we must remember that God determines who ascends to greatness.”*

The governor urged political players in the state to prioritize civility, stressing, *“We should avoid harm in the name of politics and recognize that God rules in the affairs of men.”*

Governor Diri’s remarks have sparked conversations about the role of faith and ethics in political leadership.
