A peaceful farming community in Ilewo Orile, Ogun State, is in mourning following the brutal murder of 29-year-old mother of one, Mrs. Gloria Peter Ajine. Gloria was fatally attacked while harvesting vegetables on her farm on January 16, 2025.
The mother of one had gone to the farm to prepare for the market day, but she never returned home. Her husband, Peter Ajine, tearfully recounted the heartbreaking discovery of his wife's lifeless body in a pool of blood. "I still cannot believe she’s gone. Gloria was the light of our family," he said, visibly devastated by the loss.
Gloria’s family described her as a hardworking, loving woman, deeply committed to providing for her family. She had relocated from Benue State with her husband and child in hopes of building a better life.
The murder has shocked the community, with residents expressing disbelief at the brutality of the crime in a typically peaceful area. Neighbors described Gloria as always cheerful, hardworking, and dedicated to her family.
"I just can’t fathom why anyone would do this to her. Gloria was always smiling, always helping out," said one of her neighbors, Mrs. Rukayat Oladimeji.
The police have yet to release any information on suspects, though efforts to investigate are underway. Ogun State Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that officers are working on the case.
Gloria’s husband, holding their one-year-old child, issued a heart-wrenching plea for justice, calling on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to account. "I have lost my wife, my partner, and my best friend. Our son has lost his mother. Whoever did this has taken away my joy," he said.
The Ajine and Ochong families have called for a swift investigation and have urged the Ogun State Police to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
Civil rights organizations, including the Human Rights Advocacy Watch Campaign (HRAWC) and the All Nigerian Women League (ANWL), have also condemned the murder, highlighting the growing insecurity and violence faced by women in rural communities.
"This is not just an attack on one family but on our collective humanity. Women in rural areas are particularly vulnerable, and this tragedy underscores the urgent need for greater protection," said a joint statement from the groups.
The family has appealed to the government and human rights organizations to support them in their quest for justice for Gloria.
