Tragedy struck the Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State as a violent clash led to the loss of numerous lives and the destruction of over ten houses.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, left several people injured after suspected hoodlums attacked the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the crisis involved residents of Omege Agalegu and Ukwuinyima, escalating tensions that had been simmering since November 2024.
Sources from the community suggest the violence was rooted in the aftermath of a previous conflict linked to the burial of a woman allegedly raped and murdered, which had left unresolved tensions between the groups.
“More than ten houses and property worth millions of naira have been reduced to ashes. The government needs to step in immediately,” a community source lamented.
Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that officers were deployed to restore order while investigations are underway.
Commissioner for Information, Jude Chikadibia Okpor, described the clash as a misunderstanding between youths from the affected villages that escalated into a violent confrontation.
“Authorities are aware of the incident, and measures have been taken to bring the situation under control,” he assured, urging calm as efforts continue to prevent further violence.
This incident has raised concerns over the lingering security challenges in the area and calls for stronger intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
