Bauchi State High Court No. 9 has handed down a death sentence by hanging to Usman Abdullahi for the murder of Zaidu Adamu Kofar Dumi, stemming from a dispute over a phone charger.
The prosecution, led by Barrister Abubakar Ahmed Kobi, informed the court that Adamu Mohammed Kofar Dumi reported the incident to the Police A Division. According to the report, on May 12, 2021, the defendant had a disagreement with Zaidu Adamu, the complainant’s son, and his friend, Ziya’u Abdulhadi, over a phone charger. During the altercation, Usman Abdullahi used a knife to stab Zaidu multiple times, inflicting severe injuries.
Zaidu was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
The trial commenced on December 30, 2021, with the prosecution presenting charges against the defendant for causing grievous harm and homicide. It was alleged that Abdullahi used a knife to stab the victim in the stomach, neck, and other parts of his body, leading to his death.
The defense counsel, Barrister Naziru Umar, called two witnesses and appealed for leniency on behalf of the accused.
After hearing arguments from both sides and reviewing their final submissions, Justice Sambuwal delivered the judgment. He stated, “I hereby convict Usman Abdullahi for culpable homicide punishable by death. You shall be hanged by the neck until you are dead.”
The court also sentenced Abdullahi to five years of imprisonment for grievous harm, as stipulated under Section 239 of the Penal Code.
