In a landmark judgment, the Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) can no longer impound vehicles with faded number plates or impose penalties on their owners. The decision followed a legal suit filed by lawyer Chinwike Ezebube, who argued that the FRSC, as the exclusive designer and producer of number plates in Nigeria, should be held accountable for their durability.

Justice Akintayo Aluko, presiding over the case, sided with the plaintiff, emphasizing that the FRSC cannot enforce fines or criminalize the use of faded number plates without a formal court order. In light of the ruling, vehicle owners are now advised to seek replacement number plates directly from the FRSC, subject to payment of the applicable fee, rather than face penalties for wear and tear on the plates.
