Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has criticized the process leading to his impeachment, describing it as irregular and unfair. Speaking during a rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, January 25, Obasa dismissed the corruption allegations leveled against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct, alleged that his removal was orchestrated while he was out of the country. He accused the state commissioner of police of facilitating the process, which he claimed lacked due procedure.
“I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it’s not my father’s chieftaincy title,” Obasa said. “If you want to do anything, do it well. They carried out the removal simply because I was away. Lagos is a special place, and we must not denigrate the state.”
Drawing comparisons with past leadership changes, Obasa argued that previous removals were conducted without involving security forces. He cited the cases of former Speaker Jokotola Pelumi and former Deputy Speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, whose removals he claimed were carried out in adherence to legislative norms.
Obasa also called on his accusers to provide evidence of the allegations against him, emphasizing his commitment to upholding the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly. “The Assembly is an institution above the common standard of excellence, and I will never partake in its destruction,” he stated.
Expressing gratitude to members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a supportive ally, Obasa reiterated his dedication to serving his constituents, noting that he had been re-elected six times.
Following Obasa’s removal, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.
