
A devastating accident involving a petrol tanker has left many people dead and several others injured in Enugu State on Saturday. The incident occurred on the Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway, where a tanker carrying premium motor spirit (PMS) fell and spilled its contents, leading to a deadly fire.
Eyewitnesses, including a tanker driver, reported the harrowing details of the tragedy, revealing that the fire engulfed multiple vehicles traveling on the road at the time. The blaze reportedly burned victims beyond recognition.
"Yes, there was a big tragedy this afternoon at Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway," the eyewitness said. "The tanker fell on the hilly road, spilling petrol, and unfortunately, it caught fire. All the vehicles on the road at that moment were consumed by the flames."
At least 10 people, including children, were confirmed dead, with their bodies severely burned. Several others were rushed to nearby hospitals, and many of the injured were transported to morgues.
The fire caused severe disruption, and as of the latest reports, the Ugwu Onyeama route is impassable. The second lane of the road is also blocked, with fire still raging along the highway, extending towards Agu-abor.
One eyewitness, currently trapped in Ngwo, described the situation as tragic, emphasizing the chaos and devastation that followed the explosion. The incident has prompted emergency responses, though the full extent of the damages and casualties is still being assessed.
