The decomposed remains of Pastor Esere Okilo, 45, were discovered in his home in Ekeki, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, more than a year after he was reported missing. His skeletal remains were found sitting on a toilet, clothed in a singlet, in a tragic and mysterious turn of events.
Okilo, a native of Nembe-Bassambiri, had been missing for approximately 15 months before his sister made the grim discovery. She had been facing accommodation issues and decided to visit his residence. When she peered through a window, she saw the skeletal remains, prompting her to notify authorities.
Despite his prolonged absence, residents of the area reported no foul odors coming from the apartment, leading many to believe he had simply gone away on one of his routine church pilgrimages. Okilo was known to be a devout individual who kept to himself and was not highly involved in the community.
Okilo lived alone in one of two flats within the compound, while his estranged elder brother and wife occupied the other flat. Neighbors disclosed that the two brothers had been estranged for some time. The locked toilet door, where the remains were discovered, raised suspicions about the circumstances of his death, as it had been locked from the inside.
Upon the police's arrival, the remains were removed, and Okilo’s elder brother was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the death and possible cover-up. Authorities suspect that a substance, potentially formalin, may have been applied to the body to suppress the smell.
A source at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa confirmed these findings, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the pastor's tragic demise.
