The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has successfully reunited nine children, victims of human trafficking, with their families in Kebbi State.
The children, all from the Zuru Emirate in Kebbi South, were deceived by traffickers under the guise of being taken to Gusau, Zamfara State, for schooling. Instead, they were transported to Calabar, Cross River State, where they were sold into slavery.
The formal handover took place on Friday at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, with Governor Dr. Nasir Idris personally receiving the rescued children.
Condemning the criminal act, Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for human trafficking and pledged to ensure justice is served.
“This administration will not tolerate any form of illegality, especially one as appalling as trafficking innocent children. The perpetrators must face the full weight of the law,” the governor declared.
He also called on parents to take a more active role in protecting their children. “Parents must fulfill their responsibility to train and mentor their children, ensuring they grow into responsible citizens,” he emphasized.
Speaking at the event, Kebbi State NAPTIP Commander Mas’ud Kaura disclosed details of the case. He revealed that the children were first trafficked to Zamfara before being taken to Calabar.
Kaura added, *“The agent behind this trafficking operation has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing. The culprits will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”*
The successful rescue and reunion have been hailed as a significant step in the fight against human trafficking in Kebbi State, highlighting the government’s determination to protect vulnerable children.
