Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the immediate revocation of ex-President Joe Biden’s access to classified government intelligence, citing security concerns and Biden’s alleged cognitive decline.
Trump made the announcement on Friday, February 7, via a post on his social media platform shortly after arriving at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information. Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s Security Clearances and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings,” Trump stated.
He justified his decision by referencing a 2021 move by Biden’s administration, which barred Trump from receiving intelligence briefings after the January 6 Capitol riot. At the time, Biden cited Trump’s “erratic” behavior as a national security risk.
Trump further referenced the 2023 special counsel report by Robert Hur, which suggested Biden had memory lapses and was unreliable in handling classified documents. “The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from ‘poor memory’ and, even in his ‘prime,’ could not be trusted with sensitive information,” Trump wrote. He concluded his statement with,
The decision adds to a growing list of security clearances revoked under Trump’s leadership. Previously, he rescinded access for over 50 former intelligence officials who had questioned the legitimacy of reports on Hunter Biden’s laptop. He has also removed security protections for some former government officials critical of his administration, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Biden has yet to issue an official response. However, during his presidency, he defended barring Trump from intelligence briefings, arguing there was no benefit to providing him with sensitive information. “What value is giving him an intelligence briefing?” Biden remarked in a 2021 interview. “What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”
Trump himself has faced scrutiny over classified documents. In 2022, federal agents raided his Mar-a-Lago estate, retrieving boxes of sensitive government records. He was later indicted on felony charges for illegally retaining classified documents and obstructing an FBI investigation. However, the case was dismissed after a judge ruled that the special counsel leading the prosecution was improperly appointed.
The latest move by Trump intensifies the political feud between the two leaders as the nation heads toward another contentious election cycle.
