A disturbing video showing policemen allegedly from the Itam Police Division forcefully handling a pregnant woman during a vehicle insurance enforcement operation has sparked widespread outrage in Akwa Ibom State.
The viral footage, shared on Facebook by a user identified as Mayor Sylvester, captures the moment officers dragged the woman, who was reportedly accused of not having valid insurance. The altercation escalated until she collapsed, raising concerns about her health and that of her unborn child.
Condemning the officers’ actions, Sylvester wrote, “This is what the Itam Police Station in Akwa Ibom State has turned the Third Party Insurance thing into. They are now acting like animals.” He further criticized the conduct of the officers, suggesting that such enforcement should be handled differently.
Expressing concern for the victim, Sylvester added, “Imagine how a pregnant woman is being roughhandled. I just hope her baby is still alive.” He proposed that if the police must enforce insurance compliance, they should work with insurance companies to provide on-the-spot renewal services instead of resorting to brutality.
Eyewitnesses at the scene voiced their disapproval, with many questioning the excessive force used by the officers. The video has since sparked calls for accountability, with social media users demanding an investigation into the officers involved.
Efforts to reach Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mohammed Azare, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Tifon John, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
