The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed that a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James, is in its custody over allegations of defiling a three-year-old girl.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, clarified that the minor was taken in following credible evidence, including a medical report, supporting the claims against him. She further stated that James voluntarily confessed to the offense without coercion.
Dismissing viral reports suggesting unlawful detention, DSP John assured the public that due process was being followed. She emphasized that the case is still under investigation and that the suspect would be formally charged in court on Monday, February 10, 2025.
"There is no trial by ordeal in this matter, as such practices are criminal under Nigerian law," she noted, refuting any claims of extrajudicial handling of the case.
The police spokesperson also urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and allow the legal process to take its course.
The case has since sparked debate on social media, with mixed reactions over the legal implications of prosecuting a minor.
