Police in Ilorin, Kwara State, have arrested an Islamic cleric, Abdulrahman Mohad Ballo, for allegedly murdering a final-year student of Kwara State College of Education, Lawal Hafsoh Yetunde, for ritual purposes.
Reports indicate that Ballo lured the victim after connecting with her on Facebook and obtaining her phone number. The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Sources said Hafsoh was attending a naming ceremony when she received a phone call from a friend. She stepped away to answer the call but never returned. Her disappearance prompted family members and friends to search for her before reporting the case at the Oja Oba Police Station in Ilorin the next day.
Investigators traced her last known call to Ballo, who lives in the Offa Garage area of Ilorin, though his family house is in Isalekoto. Initially denying any involvement, the suspect was linked to the crime after a police search of his residence led to the gruesome discovery of Hafsoh’s dismembered body in a bowl, alongside tools suspected to have been used in the act.
Ballo, however, claimed the victim died of an asthma attack at his residence. Authorities suspect this may not be his first crime, as evidence found at the scene suggests prior similar activities.
The suspect, now in custody at the Kwara State Police Headquarters, is reportedly the son of a well-known Islamic cleric from Isalekoto who recently passed away.
Efforts to reach the Kwara State Police spokesperson for comments were unsuccessful, as calls to her phone went unanswered, and messages remained unreturned.
