A horrific accident claimed the lives of at least five people in Nnewi on Thursday evening when a heavily loaded trailer carrying cement lost control and plowed into a residential building. The incident, which occurred near the Police Area Command headquarters, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer, unable to brake, veered off the road and crashed into the house, trapping its occupants. A distressing video that went viral on social media showed the aftermath of the crash, with the lifeless bodies of both children and adults being recovered from the debris. The footage also captured the devastated structure where the victims had been gathered before the disaster struck.
One particularly heart-wrenching scene from the video showed a distraught woman wailing uncontrollably. According to local sources, she lost two of her children in the tragedy. The accident happened as many families were celebrating Valentine’s Day, a time when people were out in large numbers.
