A professor of Haematology at the Obafemi Awo-lowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Muheez Durosinmi, has urged Nigerians to avoid usage of old and fairly used “tokunbo” electronic items like radio, television, computers, refrigerators, microwave cookers, among others, saying that the use of such gadgets has been linked to the development of cancer in the country.

According to him, old electronic equipment were capable of emitting electromagnetic frequency (emf) which could be generally hazardous to health, adding that the older the items were, the more dangerous they could be to health.

“We should realise that the people who were using them initially rejected them because of these harmful radiation and decided to dump it elsewhere,” he added.

Durosinmi who disclosed this in Lagos, on Monday, at a seminar on Health Hazards of Mobile Phones and other Electrical/Electronic Gadgets, organised by Interpharm GmbH, also urged Nigerians not to place electronic items, like television and laptops, very close to them, because of the evil effects of the radiation.

“Babies and young children must never be exposed to television and computers. Children under 16 years should be strictly prevented from using mobile phones. We should also avoid using phones with very low batteries and also avoid using longer times on phone,” he said.

Earlier, the Managing Director of Interpharm, Mr Saliu Bello, had alleged that the Federal Government had been downplaying the health hazards associated with the use of mobile phones because of the financial gains accruing to it from the operators.

“For instance, the use of cell phone in the last decade in Nigeria has been able to generate approximately 15,000 employment to the citizenry and a yearly industry turnover of over N1trillion with the consequent tax benefits to the government and other corporate social responsibility initiatives,” he said.
