A commercial motorcyclist, Mr. Okezie Onyema Onyendu, from the Obuoro community in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, has died from severe injuries sustained after a violent attack by unknown assailants in Amawom village.

The tragic incident occurred on March 7, with Okezie passing away three days later, on March 10, 2025, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia. His death came just weeks after he was reportedly banished from his community due to a dispute over land sharing.

During the assault, his attackers allegedly severed one of his ears and stole his motorcycle, mobile phone, and the day's earnings from his transport business.

Speaking to journalists at the Police Area Command in Umuahia, where the case was officially reported, the victim’s widow, Mrs. Ogechi Okezie, accused members of the Obuoro community of conspiring against her husband. She claimed he was banished in February 2024 after refusing to hand over his land to a distant relative.

“They arrested my husband and banished him from Obuoro Ibere. I took him to my village in Itunta, but they still came and ordered us to leave,” she said.

Mrs. Okezie revealed that her husband pursued legal action against the alleged conspirators, with the High Court scheduled to hear the case on March 12. However, he went missing on March 7, only for his unconscious, mutilated body to be found later.

She further alleged that a prominent chief in the Obuoro Ibere community, alongside others, had previously threatened her husband’s life — and now, she claims those responsible are threatening her as well to silence the case.

When contacted, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the matter was reported to the Umuahia Area Command, adding that an investigation is underway to uncover those behind the brutal attack.

The community remains tense as residents demand justice, while the police continue their efforts to unravel the mystery surrounding the gruesome killing.
