An 18-year-old boy, Chinedu Abimbor, has been fatally shot by police officers at a checkpoint in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, sparking widespread protests and demands for justice.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, when Chinedu, reportedly driving a Mercedes-Benz, was flagged down by police. According to eyewitness accounts, he refused to stop, leading one of the officers to open fire, hitting the teenager and killing him on the spot.
Chinedu’s younger brother, who was in the car with him, was immediately arrested and taken into custody, further fueling outrage.
In response to the killing, angry youths and grieving family members took to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday, demanding justice. The protesters marched to the palace of the traditional ruler, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, insisting on the release of Chinedu’s detained brother and accountability for the officer responsible.
A protester, Lucky Adaba, expressed frustration over what he described as a pattern of harassment by the police.
“We went to the police station to ask why they killed him, but they teargassed us and started shooting. The police keep targeting young men driving cars in Ekpoma,” he stated.
The Edo State Police Command has since launched an investigation into the shooting. According to a statement from the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of three patrol teams linked to the incident.
The statement confirmed that the shooting involved a joint security team and an unregistered Mercedes-Benz, resulting in Chinedu’s death.
Commissioner Otimenyin extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged the public to remain calm, assuring that a thorough probe would ensure justice is served.
