A tragic incident unfolded in Igbesa, Ogun State, as a police inspector identified as Ajele Oloyede reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on duty at a ceramics company.
The unsettling event occurred on Thursday, March 13, 2025, and was discovered by a fellow officer, Tolorunloju Stephen, from the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos. According to Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Stephen returned from a trip to Ikeja around 1:20 p.m. and found Oloyede resting his head on a table inside the security post.
When asked if he was feeling okay, Oloyede reportedly assured Stephen he was fine. Trusting his colleague’s response, Stephen placed his bag and pistol on the table before stepping away to use the restroom. Moments later, a gunshot shattered the silence.
Rushing back, Stephen found Oloyede slumped over, bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound.
“With the help of private security personnel on-site, the injured officer was immediately transported to Ota General Hospital,” Odutola stated. “Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor.”
Police officers later recovered Oloyede’s pistol from the scene. His body was deposited at the hospital for autopsy, and the inspector’s family has been notified.
The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for further inquiry, with authorities seeking to uncover what may have led to the tragic event.
The Ogun State Police Command extended condolences to Oloyede’s family and urged officers to seek mental health support when dealing with personal struggles.
