Former England footballer John Fashanu has launched a £100,000 lawsuit against the Nigerian Police, accusing them of unlawful arrest, intimidation, and violating his fundamental rights.
The 62-year-old ex-striker, known for his time at Wimbledon and Aston Villa, denies the allegations of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, and trespassing — charges that stem from a land dispute involving a 22-acre plot valued at over £500,000.
According to reports from *The Mirror*, the conflict began when Fashanu confronted contractors erecting a fence on his land. This confrontation led to his arrest on December 16, 2024, alongside his wife, Vivian, and their lawyer.
Fashanu claims they endured "arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment" for roughly three hours. He further alleged that the police imposed "intermittent constraints on his personal liberty," calling it a "gross unconstitutional violation."
His lawyer, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that all three were later granted administrative bail after meeting the required conditions.
Fashanu, a two-time England international and part of Wimbledon’s iconic 1988 FA Cup-winning squad, maintains his innocence, vowing to pursue justice against what he describes as an abuse of power.
The Nigerian Police have yet to respond to the lawsuit.
